Interestingly, the figure of the Charro in Mexico is the same as the Vaquero in Spain, the Cowboy in the United States, or the Gaucho in Argentina and Brazil. He is a cattle herder on horseback, with different attire depending on where he comes from. These riders of Spanish roots, specifically from Salamanca, evolved in a unique way in Mexico, coming to wear the striking Charro hats that complete their outfit and, with their generous brim, protect them from the scorching sun.
Our Charro hats are originally made in Mexico. Each one is meticulously handcrafted and adorned with different ornaments, depending on the model. Some are made of dubetyne (a felt-like material) and velvet, with sequins and gold or silver threads, typical of mariachi singers and bands. For a more sober and elegant look, we also offer hats made of pure wool, with incredible embroidered details on the crown and/or brim. At Sombreros Mengual we also offer different sizes, for children, cadets and of course adults, and even within these last sizes there are different fits.

What does the hat-making process at Mengual Hats involve?
+Once we have the hood or shell made of palm leaf, straw or plant fibres, previously sewn, woven or handmade, we place it on our already heated press, setting it on the chosen mould and in the desired size. Within a few seconds, our shell has already been transformed into a beautiful hat. We then remove it carefully and finish it off, sewing in the sweatband (inner band) and decorating it in one way or another, always following current trends and paying attention to each model's own style. This is how we obtain authentic, genuine hats, models with their own personality.
How do I know my hat size before buying it?
+To find out the right size, you need to measure the circumference of your head using a tailor's tape measure. If you don't have one, you can use a piece of thread or string and then measure it with a flat ruler.
The measurement should be taken at the level where a hat normally rests, that is, one centimetre above the ears on the sides and one centimetre above the eyebrows on the forehead. When measuring, hold the tape firmly but without pulling tight.
